At the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde you can experience five original Viking ships from the 11th-century, as well as "The Glendalough Sea Stallion", plenty of activities, history, atmosphere and a beautiful harbour environment with reconstructions of and successors to the Viking ships, in which you can sail.
The many activities provide an insight into the life and work of the Vikings. The entrance fee allows you to join a public guided tour daily during the peak season and weekends and public holidays in May, June and September.
The five original viking ships are from a blockade approximately 20 km north of Roskilde established during the latter half of the 11th-century as a defence against enemy naval attacks on the city which at the time was the capital.
In the Viking ships hall, you will gain an insight into the impressive "Thoroughbred of the Seas" project which took the Glendalough Sea Stallion to Dublin and back in 2007-08. Here you will also find the Jetty, where you can climb aboard a merchant vessel filled with goods and a warship equipped for battle! Dress up like a Viking and let your imagination carry you back to Viking times.
At Tunet, the Viking meeting place, specialists demonstrate Viking handicrafts such as metalwork, wood carving or rope making and during the summer months you can be a coin minter, visit the jewellery workshop or paint your own shield. You can experience what it was like to be a Viking onboard a Viking ship by joining one of the sailing trips from the Museum Harbour.
In the boatyard, you can observe the reconstruction of a Viking ship. The boatyard is open to the public on weekdays all year round, and also at weekends from 1 May to 30 September.
